BMEG Derby Ace Llamados' Road in the Fiesta Cup Conference

I haven't really watched Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) that much since Kerby Raymundo is out due to injury. But still, I cheer for BMEG Derby Ace Llamados (DAL).

ELIMINATIONS

Their import, Clif Brown, overwhelms me with his monster performance against the Barako Coffee Masters, 43 points and 20 rebounds in their last game of the eliminations. And that gave them a play off against the San Miguel Beermen (SMB) for that outright semifinals berth. Unfortunately, they lost; thus they landed to the third spot, just good for a quarterfinals (QF) berth. Anyhow, I thought to myself, If Brown could maintain such performance, a great match up could be seen in the semis when he meet Gabe Freeman (SMB's import) .

QUARTERFINALS

Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (RoS) made the QF too difficult for the DAL. They were down 2-1 despite Raymundo being able to share a few minutes in the hard court. Raymundo has the will to play, but his body is not yet ready. Coach Ryan Gregorio made the toughest decision before Game 4 of the QF. They had Brown in the injured list and had their third import in Tony Washam Jr.

Initially, I am against that idea. Brown may not be contributing that much on statistics, but the energy and chemistry he had with the group is something worth keeping. But Washam's debut game of 29 points and 13 rebounds convinces me that DAL needed him. And he saved DAL in the QF by scoring 49 out of 105 points in the do-or-die Game 5 of the QF.

SEMIFINALS

SMB is a tough team. With their all-star roster plus the former Best Import Freeman, it's hard to think how the DAL could win a game or two against them. Hence, it does not surprise me at all when they lose the first game of the semifinals. DAL had been playing the most number of games in this conference, in this season. They were tired (but their hearts are not).

They were able to come back in Game 2; but lost in Games 3 and 4. SMB is just a game away to defend their title as the Fiesta Conference Champions. But I guess DAL still can give another shot, another chance for a back-to-back championship. They got back to have the series 3-2, still in favor of SMB.

In Game 6, a must win for DAL, my heart breaks to see on how incompetent DAL can be against the SMB. They ALMOST got it, ALMOST. During those times when they're down 4 or 6 points with less than a minute to play, it makes me miss Raymundo sooooo much. If only Raymundo is playing, he could still create a situation to tie the game and bring it to overtime; and finally win it just like what he did against Talk N' Text Tropang Texters.

Down by 10 points, with more or less 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter, I don't want to lose hope. Coach Gregorio called a time out. And just when I thought they would be orchestrating a play, they just dribbled the ball until the time expires. Well, Roger Yap did make a basket; but that was just when there were only 5 seconds (I guess) in the shot clock. To me, I just realize that Coach Gregorio just knew when to fight and when to, *sigh*, give up. It just saddens me. I don't know, but it is painful to see them giving up - after all that they've been through. Like what I had told my PBA friends, it is more painful that the loss of Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals.

But like what the commentator had said, there's nothing that DAL should be ashamed of. And yes, I'm still proud of DAL. I will always be. They give their best, they really do.

Kerby Raymundo's Come Back

QUARTER FINALS - GAME 1 - JULY 9, 2010

I had long waited for Kerby Raymundo to suit up and play for the Derby Ace Llamados (DAL). Unfortunately, I had an event to attend to at the night of his debut game this conference. Yes, he had been off this conference to nurse an injury. He even had to fly to Hongkong for his therapy. It had been the cost of the All Filipino Cup Championship Crown. *sigh*

Though unable to watch, I am glad that DAL won. Probably a welcome victory for their captain. And not bad for 14 minutes of hard court action, he chipped in 4 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Final Score: 108-102 (DAL)

QUARTER FINALS - GAME 2 - JULY 11, 2010

Finally, I got to watch the game, and see Kerby's actions in the hard court. And hey, I got to see his sweet smile. But that smile made me wonder, for he did not normally smile in a game, he's focused. So maybe, he just suit in to play and give moral boost to his teammates, and not play hard at all. And maybe, just maybe, my hunch is correct. They lost the game. I'm sad. For when the momentum is shifted to DAL's side, an offensive foul called against Roger Yap (a very delayed whistle) and a defensive foul called against 'The Kid' right after that play. Poor decision. Even the commentators suggest that it should not be the case. The foul should have gone the other way, to the other team. And definitely, I am missing Clif Brown's monster game against the Barako Masters.

QUARTER FINALS - GAME 3 - JULY 14, 2010

Because of Typhoon Basyang that hit the country (North Luzon specifically), power had been cut off almost (or more than) 24 hours last Wednesday. Hence, I was not able to watch the game (a must win one for the DAL to gain the confidence back). Before I sleep, I got the sad news that they lost against Rain or Shine (ROS) with Sol Mercado's excellent ballin'. I hate him for being so good, ha ha. No, he's nice. I just wanted DAL to win, that's why.

But just when I thought that's the only sad news of the story, Vangie relayed to me that Kerby did not play (alongside with Marc Pingris) due to injury. *sigh* *sigh* *sigh* I do hope he could regain the power that he (and Pingris) had back in the All Filipino Cup to have a back-to-back championship this season.

And the not so good news continues as Brown will be replaced by a new import in the name of Tony Washam. Well, a lot of import come to bring a team into a W (beginner's luck?). I hope Washam could do the same.

QUARTER FINALS - GAME 4 - JULY 16, 2010

I read that Kerby and Pingris are offering themselves to play tonight. But Coach Ryan Gregorio would prefer to use up the bench, rather than sacrificing the two towers' health. Salute to this team.

Never say never. This is a do or die game. And like what Kevin Garnett said last NBA Finals 2008, "Anything is possible". Be inspired 'The Kid'. We are with you, win or lose.

Have you watched last Sunday's battle between our very own Derby Ace Llamados (DAL) and San Miguel Beer Men (SMB)? It was indeed an intense game. And I have to credit everyone for stepping up most especially when Clif Brown have to sit as early as 5 minutes left in the payoff period. I can still see the joy of Marc Jean Pingris when the final seconds of the 4th quarter fades. Indeed, it was a sweet victory. Aside from that, I guess that is DAL's way of welcoming their team captain, Kerby Raymundo.

Kerby Raymundo, B-MEG Derby Ace’s go-to-guy at the post, is now feeling good and ready to come back.

This was disclosed by B-Meg Derby Ace coach Ryan Gregorio to GMANews.TV after the 6-foot-6, versatile forward underwent rehab in Hong Kong.

“The doctor in Hong Kong diagnosed the real injury of Kerby and he found out that the injury is not coming from either his knee or his leg," said Gregorio in a telephone interview. “The injury comes from his pelvic area somewhere in his lower back which caused pain all the way down to his knee and his leg."

"Our plan is to have him (Raymundo) joining us before the playoffs so he can get his rhythm back the moment we reach the tough grind,

Gregorio, whose team is seeking a “modern-day grandslam" in the Philippine Basketball Association this season, said that Raymundo is feeling significant changes on his knee and his leg after undergoing rehab.

“He’s feeling better now, but we’re not rushing him. He has yet to join the practice because he just arrived Sunday," said Gregorio, who asked his team captain to suit up and join the rest of the team on the bench during Sunday’s game against sister team San Miguel Beer.

"Our plan is to have him joining us before the playoffs so he can get his rhythm back the moment we reach the tough grind," added the only coach who won two All-Filipino championships for the Purefoods franchise.

Raymundo’s presence on the bench inspired the rest of the Llamados, who pulled off a gripping 83-82 squeaker of the Beermen courtesy of a game-winning jumper by James Yap.

“He joined us on the bench so that he can get the feel of the game back on his system," said Gregorio.

Raymundo’s return will certainly bolster the Llamados’ frontline.

Is Raymundo’s comeback also means the squad will be out to look for a new import?

Clif Brown, who replaced first choice Lorenzo Wade after Raymundo opted to rest his hurting leg, has been playing complimentary role for the locals.

“He’s been clearing the boards for us and he’s been more of a weakside rebounder and scorer," said Gregorio. “But he only scored seven and 11 points the past few games, numbers which can be produced by a local player. I’ve been honest with Clif about it."

Gregorio said he also informed his import that there are names as possible standby for security purposes.

“There are names, but there wasn’t any transactions made at this time. We explained the situation to our import so as to push his game a notch higher more and also for security purposes," said Gregorio. “But right now, we’re sticking with him." - Rey Joble, GMANews.TV

To introduce myself, I am the shy, timid, and speechless lad that Vangie introduced to you last May 09, 2010 after your game against the Barangay Ginebra Kings (BGK). I am the girl who has your jersey (as given to me by my angel). Needless to say, I'm a fan [and this site is the proof].

I've been missing you playing on the hard court. But your health is more important than seeing you play. I got worried as I hear from PBA that you flew to Hongkong to get a second opinion for you had been nursing your injury at a considerably long time now. Good thing I had confirmed from Vangie that you were there to focus on your therapy. That gave me a sigh of relief.

This had been my status in all of the social media that I had joined. Definitely, I am missing Kerby Raymundo. It has been two months since I last saw him play - and that was when they were hailed as the All Filipino Cup Champions. His knee injury [which is already prevalent last conference] is the cost of that trophy. It is worth it anyhow.

But it was disturbing for me as I read a post from a Facebook Fanpage about a rumor involving a trade between The Kid and Willie Miller [who is recently traded to Barangay Ginebra Kings in exchange to Cyrus Baguio]. It does alarm me for I really cannot picture out [just yet] KR#5 in a different jersey. I have to confirm right away. And am happy to know that everything stays as a RUMOR with NO SUBSTANCE.

Looking forward at seeing KR#5 on the hardcourt once again in that Derby Ace Llamados (DAL) jersey. For now, I am hoping for DAL's victory against Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (ROS). Smelling victory with less than 3 minutes now :)

A Missed Opportunity

April 4, 2010. It was Easter Sunday. It was my mom's birthday. I received a message from a fellow Kerbyholics, Vangie, asking me if I would happen to be at Manila in the afternoon. They would be visiting/watching Derby Ace Llamados (DAL) practice. Initially, I was really excited and thoughts of seeing Kerby Raymundo in flesh and having another opportunity of having a picture with him comes into my senses. But got a bit disappointed for I would be missing this rare opportunity for my mother. It's alright, there would still be next time.

Here are some of the photos they had that day.

Kerby's nursing an injury in his knees. I heard that he already had that injury back in the All Filipino Cup but chose to play for the team for the much coveted Championship Crown. It's worth the price anyhow.

Here's a wish that Kerby would be back on hardcourt anytime soon.

We Are The Champions and We Made History

Yesterday, before going out of the office, I boastfully told Jan that I'll be singing "We Are The Champions" tonight. Well, of course that was an understatement. I still believe in the powers of Coach Tim Cone of coming back to the series. Besides, history has been told that NO ONE had swept a Finals Series of an All Filipino Cup. Nevertheless, I still got out earlier to catch up with the game and the awarding of the Best Player of the Conference (BPC).

I was overly excited for I am Feeling It, that Tonight's Gonna Be A Good Night. If you had religiously watched the series from Game 1, you'll definitely agree with me that Purefoods TJ Giants (PF) won't fall from Alaska Aces.

Despite the fact that I leave the office early, I still was unable to catch up the first few minutes of the game as well as the awarding of the BPC to the deserving James Yap. Anyhow, the PF leads the game by nine (9) big points, making me more excited and wished that the game's already over. And although I have to wait for three more quarters, it was still worth the wait for the balloons dropped from the ceiling to rejoice the sweet sweep victory of PF. An outstanding and history making of 4-0 sweep in an All Filipino Conference Finals.

See? Even Stephanie was very happy holding that PF flag while I am wearing my Kerby Raymundo Jersey.

Game 4 was a very rewarding game for PF and the fans. Allow me to cite almost all of them here in my post.

Don Allado. The ever funny Don Allado contributed much in destructing Aces' ball handlers and make them turn the ball over. Aside from that, he stands as one of the cheer leaders making the PF crowd more lively and more noisy. Plus, I love the way he gargles San Mig Light in the dug out during their interview, LOL!

Jondan Salvador. I have never seen Jondan Salvador played that much in the eliminations, Quarter Finals, or Semi Finals. But his game last night shows an excellent player in him. His block, his defense, and his perimiter shot - all deserves cheers from the crowd.

Paul Artadi. The main cheerleader in the hardcourt. I can see him rejoice each time a teammate buy a bucket. He is the first one who'll clap his hands and jump for joy. But he also performs brilliantly in the hardcourt. A great reliever for Roger Yap.

KG Canaleta. How can I forget your stunning dunk in Game 3? Never would I forget that. Over and over, I would remember how you awaken my blood and holding on to the hope of winning Game 3. When in the line up there seem to be no offensive player for PF, you surprisingly make the crucial baskets to rally.

PJ Simon. A super-sub in you had been a great factor in relieving Roger Yap and James Yap. Not only that, you had given your all, more than 100%. You never minded your knee injury.

Rafi Reavis. Honestly, I questionned your addition to the group. I say "What? Reavis in exchange of Rico Villanueva?" But then you made me eat my words. You had played excellent basketball atop your limelight performance back in your former team. And yes, I too love your dunks that makes me say "Whoah!"

Marc Pingris. Are you the next Cris Bolado? You were definitely lucky to have won the Fiesta Conference last season and won the All Filipino this conference. But along with that lucky charm you had within yourself is your outstanding defense. You had made me worry when you committed your 5th personal foul. But like Kerby Raymundo, you definitely know how to keep yourself from fouling out. You even gained an offensive foul out of Willie Miller. How was that? I do thought that you will be reigned as the Finals MVP. But I guess personal fame is nothing as compared to team's glory, right?

Rico Maierhofer. Another lucky man, indeed. It was your first conference that already brought you this championship. I remember how you hoped to win a championship with Purefoods. God is so kind that He had blessed you your wish right away. I would never want to see you wearing jersey other than PF. I so love how you and Paul Artadi bumped for a cheer.

James Yap. Last night for you was a dream you surely never wanted to wake up. You were hailed as the BPC, your team swept the number one seeder of the conference to bag the championship crown, and you were awarded as the Finals MVP. You deserve it. You had the moves that always make me eye-popped and jaw-dropped. And surely, you still had a million moves to show.

Roger Yap. From the genesis of my being a PF fan, you already caught my eyes. You were the only player who never loses hope and who played professionally up to the last seconds of the game. I missed you when you had to cure an injury. But you do looked better wearing casual attire rather than your jersey, hee hee. You had been playing nine years of professional basketball and you had lifted your career one level higher with your semi-finals' three straight Best Player of the Game citation. Though you have not been that great in the Finals series, I still have my eyes on you. You did great last game!

Kerby Raymundo. You were the man in Game 2. I had imagined the trash talk to be thrown at you when you missed that free throw. But hey, I had that confidence on you, you were [to me] a 100% free throw shooter. And the way you intentionally missed your second free throw is a very intelligent move from a veteran. In Game 3, you have not gained a field goal. But your only field goal is enough to make it happen. And I really love the way you shout your heart out after that basket. Game 4, you are the best. I remember the commentators had been applausing your Kerby moves. And your two 3-point trey elevates the team. Who could have thought that someone as big as you can have that ringless 3-point basket? What I love about your moves is your turn around fadeaway. It's as if you had mastered that move that no one can ever stopped you. I do wanted you to have that Finals MVP plaque, but it seems like the press has something against you. Well, the commentators were all praises on you anyway. And I would still proudly wear my Kerby Raymundo jersey, for I Love KR#5. Oh, another thing that made me love you is the way you say praises and thanks to the Lord in each and every interview you had. And you will always cite the Lord on top of everyone else. You maybe the hot-headed team captain most PBA fans knew, but for me, you are someone I look up to [not because you are tall], but because of your humility and your love of God and your family.

And of course, the last in my list, but definitely not the least...

Coach Ryan Gregorio. Many doubted your talent and tactics that you could win another championship. I have read some who even wanted to have you resigned. You proved them wrong. And I am always with you all along. Not only because you are good looking, but you are an intelligent coach. And yes, you made history - the only PF coach who won two All Filipino Cup. I can feel your emotions as you hug each and every PF roster. And I love your statement,

"Chapter closed, destination reached, mission accomplished. Now we can celebrate."

Hope I could be part of your victory party together with your other rosters Rommel Aducul, Jonathan Fernandez, and Chris Timberlake.

Finally, after four (4) long months I had stepped once more inside the Big Dome to witness the Game 3 duel between Purefoods TJ Giants (PF) and Alaska Aces in their Best-of-Seven Finals for the 2009-2010 Philippine Cup. Originally, I should be having the company of my high school bestfriend, Susie (Alaska fan ever since). However, due to unavoidable circumstance, she won't be able to make it. Hence, we (my angel and I) resorted at having the company of his sisters.

We were at the Aranta Coliseum as early as 4PM. We only got the tickets for the Upper A Section (free seating). With that, we comfortably positioned ourselves in that section as early as 4PM to secure ourselves a seat. We were at first worried for we might be seating around Alaska fans, and it would be dead hard to cheer for PF come game time. Fortunately, we were all PF fans.

A game of the Philippine Women Basketball League (PWBL) started the Sunday action [particularly, FEU vs ASCOF]. As the game near its end, the crowd began making noise [cheering for the underdogs - ASCOF]. The game finished at around 5:30PM; while the big game will start by 6PM.

As the PF lineup entered the Big Dome, you'll get deaf with the noise. And it even become louder as James Yap entered the hardcourt. As for me, I can't contain my excitement. Although I am already having the thoughts that PF will not win that night, I still have high hopes that they will. And I bet KG Canaleta is making that feeling intense with his slam dunk warm ups.

As the buzzer signaled the start of Game 3, we were bombarded by the noise being made by the Alaska band [and a few fans]. They scored the first basket. But PF rallied immediately to gain their very first lead [4-2]. And after that, Alaska commanded the ballgame throughout.

First Lead [4-2]

Well, the difference between watching the game live and watching the game on TV is that, you get to cheer loudly for your team; and you get to stand for excitement even if your team is trailing with as much as 12 points. You definitely won't succumb yourself with that 12 point deficit [knowing that PF can rally from such in the most impossible way]. And that is how we [PF fans] rejoice in each and every basket the team could have.

I particularly want to have a special mention to referee #67 who seem to need another seminar about PBA's rules after what happened last night. While PF is already on its momentum of coming back with only just 4 points deficit; he blindly saw Peter June Simon signaling a time out right in front of him. It resulted to Simon's gamble for the ball, committing a backcourt error. Of course, all you will hear is the crowd saying boo boos [and I am one of 'em]. The other fault that he committed was when he called for an offensive foul against Roger Yap when in fact he [R. Yap] was in the no charging zone (Thanks to my angel for educating me with basketball 101's). Good thing, their main officiating referee corrected him and called a blocking foul on the opponent instead. I believe he is also the culprit in calling a technical foul for second motion on Kerby Raymundo against Reynel Hugnatan when in fact, it was Hugnatan who pushed Raymundo. Anyhow, LA Tenorio to the rescue was pushed in return by Raymundo (clap clap clap).

Entering the payoff period with 67-61, still, in favor of Alaska

Going back to the game, I specifically like how Canaleta brings back the hopes to all PF fans inside the Araneta. His fade away 3-point shot brings back PF to only 3 point deficit (I surmise). Not to mention his in-your-face dunk similar to that of Michael Jordan's that creates the sound of amazement among the fans. In addition, with how J. Yap inches his way in every field goal, it made me signal my angel to bring out his J. Yap jersey. Well, I told him that we will only be bringing them out once we feel or sense a smell of victory. And the sweet scent is already on our senses. Most importantly, when Canaleta clinched another 3 pointer [assist by Raymundo] in less than 2-minutes left in the payoff period, he tied the game at 77. Each and every PF fan were on their feet jumping and cheering against the few Alaska fans. I am even delighted on how Joaqui Trillo is encouraging the Alaska fans to make some noise. In return, Don Allado motioned for a response cheer from us. And of course, PF fans makes the loudest noise.

Back at PF side, Raymundo is making his post up against Alaska defenders. I know it was his off night. I am even trying to shout to him to pass the ball to a free teammate. But his course to the basket gained him, finally, a field goal. It is the only basket that Raymundo had the entire night; and it was enough to taste their second driver seat 79-77 (Their first was back in the first quarter at 4-2) with only 19 seconds remaining. Definitely, Kerby Raymundo's Only Basket Make It Happen. With that, I bring out my Raymundo jersey and wear it proudly. And I can feel Raymundo's emotion pouring as if already bagging the Championship Crown. (I hope I could find a video clip of that.)

Lastly, the tight defense of PF in the last 19 seconds drowned Alaska in the series with 3 to nothing. Kudos to Marc Pingris for his excellent defensive stops on Tenorio and Willie Miller (There's no Miller Time last night. Hooray!).

Kerby Raymundo Stars as Purefoods TJ Giants Frustrates San Miguel Beermen, Takes 3-2 Series Lead

I totally made a wrong prediction that the Purefoods TJ Giants will be coming to this series tired after a grueling series with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. What I saw in Game 5 was the exact opposite as the Purefoods TJ Giants gets past the San Miguel Beermen 94-82 and gain the series lead at 3-2 lead by one of its main man Kerby Raymundo.

In an earlier game preview, Purefoods TJ Giants coach Ryan Gregorio openly said that he rested the Giants on Thursday. Such may be the reason why they came out fresh in this game. This is the exact opposite for the Beermen who dragged their feet having one step late in getting rebounds and in defense. The Giants also capitalized on their hot outside shooting while the Beermen were not able to get their rhythm going missing one outside shot after the other.

Another factor contributing to San Miguel Beermen’s downfall is its poor free throw shooting. If I remember it right, Denok has the most free throws attempt as he was frequently fouled driving to the basket. In spite of that, he just converted roughly around 50%. He should definitely improve this skills. I also wondered why there’s no legitimate center to man the middle in some periods of the game.

There’s also too many mismatches enjoyed by the TJ Giants like KG Canaleta converting threes in front of Bonbon Custodio and other smaller defenders and the coaching staff did not even bothered until KG sanked his third three point shot. Heck, that’s 9 points in between time outs.

Looking back at the previous series games played by the Beermen, there’s a big percentage that they were not able to get back after trailing the series at 2-3. Therefore, we are at a big disadvantage coming into Game 6. However, it is also interesting to note that we have overcame a 2-3 deficit just last conference when we beat the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings to take the crown. If this is indeed not a fluke, then we can still certainly win the series with a deciding Game 7 on Wednesday. Probably the best thing to do today is to rest the Beermen instead of practicing to get fresh legs tomorrow and let the coaching staffs review the game tapes.

Suddenly, Purefoods is in command in its semifinal duel with the highly fancied San Miguel Beer team.

The Giants continued to defy the odds, stunning the Beermen, 94-82, for the second straight game to gain the pivotal 3-2 lead in their KFC PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven semifinal showdown at the Araneta Coliseum Friday night.

As in Game Four, the Purefoods starting unit did a heckuva job and the reserves had key contributions as the Giants moved to within a win of a second all-Filipino final stint in three years.

Seemingly enjoying a second wind after surviving Rain or Shine in a grueling quarters battle, Purefoods seized control early and sustained the heat throughout to push San Miguel on the brink.

The Giants try to complete a series upset in Game Six Sunday or Game Seven Wednesday to gain the right to challenge the Alaska Milk Aces in the finals.

“We like where we are right now but we have no reason to celebrate until we get that win No. 4,” said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio.

“We know how capable San Miguel is. We’ll stick with the game plan of buckling down on defense and making it hard for them to score. I think that’s the best way to have a chance to beat a mighty opponent,” Gregorio added.

San Miguel coach Siot Tanquingcen said they would certainly come out with an all-out effort Sunday to force a sudden-death.

The Beermen fought with grit and spunk but the Giants rose to the challenge, pulling off a wire-to-wire win.

Kerby Raymundo, Rafi Reavis and Roger Yap scored the game’s first three baskets and the Giants held on to the lead to the finish.

The trio and two other Purefoods starters in James Yap and Marc Pingris all came through with a sterling job, leading the Giants to the win that sent them to the threshold of a 21st PBA finals.

“Our starters are really getting the job done but they just couldn’t play 48 minutes. Our reserves had their key contributions,” said Gregorio making special mention of Nino Canaleta.

“KG Canaleta was benched in Game Three on my decision. Still, he came out tonight and gave us tremendous help. That’s a testament to the character that he has,” Gregorio said of Canaleta.

Purefoods took the half at 49-36 on the strong start by James Yap and Raymundo and the team sustained the momentum in the third quarter with Canaleta firing 10 points.

The former UE stalwart was 2-of-3 from the three-point area and 2-of-2 from the stripe in five minutes of action in that period.

Raymundo and the two Yaps scored at least 17 each and they were in there helping the team close out the game.

The Beermen reeled to a second straight loss as they were again beaten in shooting and rebounding.

James Yap and Raymundo started strong with both hitting double-figure output right in the opening half.

The Giants torched the Beermen with a 62.5-percent shooting in the second period, enabling them to carry a 13-point spread over into the final half.

Curiously, the Giants had a paltry 33.3 percent shooting as against the Beermen’s 54.5 percent clip in the first quarter.

Dondon Hontiveros made nine points on perfect shooting in the first quarter but was held down to two the rest of the way.

Going down as footnote in the contest was Olsen Racela coming through with eight steals – tying the all-time best made earlier by Yoyong Martinez and Johnny Abarrientos. (SB)

I watched the battle between the Giants and the Aces last night, hoping that a gift from Kerby will come.

Alaska Aces had been leading the conference with a 7-1 win-loss record. The only team that beat them was the Rain or Shine Realtors (ROS). Ironically, it was ROS' only win for the conference. And for the record, Purefoods TJ Giants (PF) have not beaten the Aces in the last conference, all four games.

The first half (well, up to third quarter) shows that PF just can't beat the Aces. LA Tenorio had been very lucky in his three point shots; while, it is given that Willie Miller is a great Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player. But despite the lead, which is as big as 20 points, I never lose hope that PF can still beat the Aces. They were the only team known at making their opponents cry for a sorry loss.

Fourt quarter shows Kerby Raymundo's heart. I can see him aggressively making shots. In fact, he had his conference high last night, 25 big points with NO turn over for 'The Kid'.

It was around 3 minutes left, and the Aces still lead as much as 10 big points. Their 3-point shots were heart-breakers for the PF (and for me too). But still, I am all hopes that Kerby can still save the day. Unfortunately, as Peter June Simon throw his 3 point shot, and missed, I called it a game. Congratulations to the Aces! I was kinda dishearten that Kerby's efforts had been put to waste. But, that's the name of the game. Someone should win, and someone will definitely lose. I am not 100% disappointed anyway, for I knew Kerby did his best.

My fingers are still crossed - I wanted him to be the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the season.

I Love Kerby Raymundo

I really have to sleep now, I have a date with my sister and my cousin later (later 'coz it's already Saturday, it's 12mn). But the joy brought to me by my sponge bob is overflowing that I wanted to post this one right away.

Earlier, I watched the knock out game between Purefoods TJ Giants (PF) and Talk N' Text Tropang Texters (TNT). The first half is James Yap's half. PF had led as much as 12 points. However, TNT got the strength to come back before the half ends.

I really get thrilled with the thought that PF will really win this game. But, as Marquin Chandler is called for his 5th personal foul, I got a little worried. Then I remember the triumph of PF against Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (RoS) even with Brian Hamilton being ejected from the game. I know they can make it. Why not? Kerby Raymundo who showcased an import-like play is here to save the game.

In the last 2.4 seconds (I'm not so sure) of the pay off period, I almost lose hope. James Yap is not 100% for he is suffering from fever(?). But Raymundo's 3 point shot and 1 extended the game for 5 minutes more. I can feel Raymundo's heart shouting for joy then. He could have win the game right away if he had made the free throw (the only FT he missed). But I guess, it's not yet time.

Just when TNT had already been rejoicing with the back-to-back-to-back 3 pointers of Renren Ritualo, PF shows how badly they wanted to win. And another 5 minute extension necessitates to determine the winner of the ballgame.

And yes, it is another sorry loss for TNT. In their last 4 games (TNT vs PF), PF always won the game by breaking TNT's heart. TNT almost always win the game, but PF always grab the ballgame.

I had my fingers crossed while praying that PF win this game. Otherwise, I would say goodbye to PBA as early as now. And God never let me down. PF wins the game 126-123 after the 2nd overtime. I felt the joy of the team as they hugged each other after the game (almost like championship spirit then). Again, PF had broken a record in history. A trivia was mentioned that the previous conference finalists always reached up to the quarter finals on the following conference. But not this time. PF had broken that history.

Obviously, Raymundo is the best player of the game with 33 big points, 10 rebounds, and 9/10 from the FT line. And what makes me love Raymundo more? In every statement he made in his interview, he would always say 'Thank You Lord!'

I simply love KR#5. Hope to see you in the championship!

Both are the top forwards in the PBA today. They possess skills that separates them from others. Both are athletic and can play multiple positions in front court.

The Kid

Kerby's favorite player in the NBA is Kevin Garnett, he even uses the same jersey number that KG used in the NBA. When KG used 21 - Kerby used 21, when KG traded to the Boston and used 5 - Kerby switch also to #5. Clearly Kerby played the style of play Garnett do. Standing 6 ft 6", this versatile big man can play 4 or 5, or even at 3.

He was a star in Letran Knights back in college. "The Kid" was not drafted because Red Bull elevated him directly from PBL, Red Bull join the PBA league in 2000 and they were allowed to elavate 5 players. Kerby was traded to Purefoods 2002. Currently, he is one of the leaders on the team, despite of James Yap presense Kerby is still vital cog in the Purefoods Giants.

The Spiderman

Another high flying forward from FEU in the college, Arwind Santos. You might not intemidate his 6' 4" frame because of skinny type of body. But once you see he play - you change your perception towards him. Santos is very athletic and full of energy. Even though he gave up 2 inches to Kerby but he possess the leaping ability that earn him more rebounds and blocks. In his 4 years in the league, he rapidly learns how to play smart specially in crunch time.

Santos was selected 2nd overall in 2006 PBA draft, since then the Air 21 now called Burger King whopper's did not regret about their prized pick.

Currently both men are members of Philippine National Team which will compete on FIBA Asia Championship later this year.

The Verdict

So, now my verdict in this another classic battle of athletic and versatile forwards: it's a tight battle but I have to chose Kerby Raymundo. Although currently, Arwind has much better statistics and even have more athletism and energy to Kerby. But Kerby has more heart and experience than Arwind. In this league, heart and experience rules more that stats - that's why Purefoods (4-3) is having better standing than Burger King (4-4).

I bet now everybody understands why Coach Yeng Guiao badly wants Kerby Raymundo back in Team Pilipinas. I got the chance to watch their GoodWill Game against Australia [Final Score: 87-63 (Team Pilipinas)].

The first quarter was dominated by James Yap. I saw his back to back baskets, one of which is a three pointer. Second and third quarter was Kerby's. I loved it how he wears that smile after he had a three pointer. And how about the commentator saying that Kerby Raymundo is the perfect international player -- he is big, he can move inside, and he has an outside shot. I failed to watch the pay off period, but my cousin told me that Kerby is the Best Player of the Game; while my Angel told me that Kerby and J.Yap are the leading scorers of the game.

But of course basketball is a team sport. I salute the Powerade Team Pilipinas that includes team captain Asi Taulava, Jayjay Helterbrand, Mick Pennisi, James Yap, Arwind Santos, Gabe Norwood, Sonny Thoss, Willie Miller, Cyrus Baguio, Kelly Williams, Ryan Reyes, Ranidel de Ocampo and Jared Dillinger. Most specially to my idol, the assistant team captain Kerby Raymundo. Keep making your country PROUD!

I have been loving watching Purefoods TJ Giants (PF) games. Aside from Barangay Ginebra Kings (BGK), I am a PF fanatic. Aside from Chris Pacana, I'm a Kerby Raymundo fan.

Well, I've collected three (3) of the most exciting ball games of PF. Their buzzer beaters. It would really make your body hair stand for excitement and happiness.

James Yap Buzzer Beater

He had done this many times before. And he did it once more. That's why he had been called 'The Big Game James'. It was PF vs Air21 Express on October 31, 2008. If you never know what PF can do, you might lose your hopes in the last minute of the 4th Quarter. It was 25 seconds remaining, Air21 had their 5 point lead (91-96). But Kerby, having his career high, never gave up yet. His 3 point shot provide greater hopes for the PF team. 15 seconds remaining, Air21 ball, 94-96. PF have no choice but to foul. They had fouled Gary David. Luckily, David missed one (1) of his two (2) charities, only extending the lead to 3 points (94-97), with 12.9 seconds remaining. Good it is that Enrico Villanueva had reached in for the rebound. PF has no time out left. Rico passed the ball to Chico Lanete. Chico crosses the half court and dished the ball to Jonathan Fernandez. Tan-Tan then gave the ball to Kerby. Kerby, with the clock winding down, makes a 3 point attempt, but his shot doesn't go. James battled for the rebound against Arwind Santos. He turned around, shoot the ball, and *kaboom*, he made a 3 pointer, extending the ball game for 5 more minutes. And all their efforts are worth it. They won the ball game, 108-105, with Kerby as the Best Player of the Game (BPG), having 37 big points and 11 big rebounds.

Chico Lanete Buzzer Beater

There's no Roger Yap for PF, so someone from the point guard (PG) position has to step up. And that would be, Chico this time. November 7, 2008, PF vs Talk N' Text Tropang Texters (TNT), 25.2 seconds remaining, 87-86 in favor of TNT. James has the leather, he passed it to Rico, then Rico passed it to Kerby. Only about 10 seconds left, Kerby take the shot, but he missed it. Rico battled for the lose ball, and gave it to Chico who had struggled for the ball as well against Mac-Mac Cardona. The moment he got a good grip of the leather, with only a second left, he just takes the shot, and he did it. A miracle shot from the all night hot, Chico Lanete. PF won, 88-87. And who else could be the BPG, yes, it's Chico. He has his career high of 24 big points, with 5/7 from the 3 point territory.

Enrico Villanueva Buzzer Beater

The most recent of the PF buzzer beater games was courtesy of Rico. It was PF vs San Miguel Beermen (SMB) on a PBA Sunday, November 23, 2008, my birthday. The score was 82-83 in favor of SMB with only 5.7 seconds remaining. Again, it was Kerby who made it possible for PF to reach this one. James, though having a high-fever, still played. Unfortunately, he can't deliver the points he used to contribute. It was 76-81 back on 2:44 minutes when Kerby hit a 3 pointer. Still anybody's ballgame. Not only that, Kerby made a back-to-back basket. He had a 3-point play opportunity, letting the PF to gain the lead, 82-81. But SMB won't give up. They have all the time to get the lead back, and all the stars of PBA, ha ha. Yes, SMB is an all-star studded team. And almost for the last 2 minutes, no one had earned a basket. Not until DonDon Hontiveros had his fade away shot, grabbing the lead 82-83 with 34.7 seconds remaining. It's PF's turn to turn the ball over. But, James had been called for an offensive foul against Mic Penisi who, as what the officials had said, already established his position. But believe me, Penisi is moving, it should not be an offensive foul. But, it was the break of the game. Only 30 seconds left, SMB ball. It was a bright idea for Coach Ryan Gregorio not to let his players commit a foul. Anyway, there would be 6 seconds left after the play to be executed by SMB. Luckily, SMB failed to get a basket, Penisi just throw an airball. With 5.7 seconds remaining, Coach Ryan called for a time out. And I just love what Coach Ryan had told his men, 'We'll gonna win this guys'. Yeah, that's my Coach. The play was designed for Kerby. He's the man of the hour. He was the one who scored the last 6 points of the team. But with the double, then triple defense of SMB, he can't get away to take the shot, but he got away to pass the ball to the free Rico underneath the basket to win the ball game. And yes, it was Kerby's night again. It was Kerby's birthday gift for me, hi hi. He got 25 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists. And, in case you don't know, he was still suffering from amoebiasis that night.

Slowly but surely, the San Miguel Beermen are fading away from its old winning form that brought them this far this conference as they lost a heart-breaking ballgame against the wounded Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants, 84-83.

With no clear go-to-guy to take charge during crunch time, the San Miguel Beermen lost an opportunity to score in an offensive play that could give them the win or at least force the game into overtime if Purefoods sinks a triple. The worst thing that they have done is a defensive lapse in the final play where bigman Mick Pennisi forgot about his man, Enrico Villanueva, in trying to help out in defending Kerby Raymundo.

This type of loss reminds us of the loss of Danny Seigle and Marc Pingris due to injuries. Danny Seigle could have took charge during that offensive play and Marc Pingris could have defended well against Kerby Raymundo. By the way, Kerby Raymundo feasted in the three-point region sinking one triple after the other after Jay Washington and Dorian Pena failed to contain him.

With the way things are going, it’s clear that the San Miguel Beermen should learn how to win close games. Gone are the days that they can lead big points heading into the fourth quarter. Can the San Miguel Beermen still maintain the second spot in the team standings? That remains to be seen on its next games where the only option is to win as the opposition are already catching up.

Still struggling with injuries to key players, the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants got one big push on one big shot by Enrico Villanueva against the San Miguel Beermen.

Villanueva scored on a left-handed shot underneath the basket on an assist by Kerby Raymundo in the dying seconds as the Giants squeaked past the Beermen, 84-83, in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Astrodome Sunday night.

"We’ve been struggling and win like this is definitely a welcome development. This is one big push towards our goal of still making it to the top," said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio.

"Ang hirap manalo sa tournament na ito. Manalo ka nang isa, para ka nang nag-champion. All our wins are like this — buzzer-beater or overtime. We’re playing hurt. The good thing is that the guys are just keeping on fighting," Gregorio also said.

Still playing minus Peter June Simon and Roger Yap and with James Yap half-healthy, the Giants gutted it out to notch their sixth win against seven losses.

Villanueva came through with a double-double game and emerged the Giants’ biggest hero by converting the winning basket just before the final buzzer sounded.

The Purefoods mentor actually designed the play for Raymundo as they got possession following a 24-second violation by the San Miguel Beermen with only 5.7 ticks left to play.

Attracting a double-team defense, Kerby Raymundo had the presence of mind in handing the ball to Villanueva who quickly took the shot breaking the heart of the Beermen.

Dondon Hontiveros had his own big shot earlier, making a tough fade-away off Yap to push the Beermen ahead at 83-82 with 34.7 seconds left to play.

The Beermen appeared already headed for the win when Mick Pennisi drew an offensive foul from Yap in the ensuing play.

Alas, the San Miguel Beermen broke down in their final offensive thrust and in their final defensive stance, thus, suffering a third straight loss and their fifth in 12 games in all.

"This is a big win considering we got it against one of the elite teams in the league right now," said Gregorio.

Despite the loss, the Beermen remained at second place, two games behind the pace-setting Alaska Milk Aces. At joint third are Air21 and Sta. Lucia at 6-5.

Kerby Raymundo led all scorers with 25 points while Villanueva finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

San Miguel was paced by Lordy Tugade and Dorian Pena with 18 and 17, respectively. (NC)

Purefoods Survived Despite Unbelievable Calls from the Officials

I never watched Game 1. I am only watching Barangay Ginebra Kings (BGK) and Purefoods TJ Giants (PF) games. My friend, whom I treated as my younger sister asked me to update her of the game since she won't be ablt to watch it. And it's my pleasure updating her.

To my surprise, James Carlos Yap will be playing. News had told that he might not play due to injury. As what the commentators said, two Yaps (James and Roger) are missing. But not this time. J. Yap is there to play.

PF had a poor start. Air21 Express showcased a full court press. They had their, uhm, good defense. First Quarter ended with 15-22 in favor of Air21. I thought PF would lead at the Second Quarter with 35-32 in favor of Air21 before the Quarter ends. But, it was so disappointing since it ended 37-43, still, in favor of Air21.

But my hopes ain't over. I felt good when they tied at 53 despite the dirty defense exhibited by Air21. It even become more exciting since it was Kerby Raymundo who make the basket for the lead. It was a 3 point play for him. Seems like the momentum was now in PF. Homer Se just had an air ball after PF got the lead. Not just that, Air21 had committed a lot of fouls, ha ha. Not only players, but Coach Bo Perasol as well. *wink wink* It is not surprising. Perasol and Air21 is used to it, ha ha. It was 72-66 in favor of PF at the end of Third Quarter.

Now, this one's unbelievable. Team manager Alvin Patrimonio was called for a technical foul? Say what?! Oh well, how could Patrimonio not react to the offensive foul called against Enrico Villanueva when it was supposed to be a 3-point play. Hmmm, smells something fishy huh? I just can't believe it. I just said 'booooooooooooooo'. That technical foul was followed by three more technicals. One for Coach Ryan Gregorio who did nothing, and two for Topex Robinson. Topex made me laugh, ha ha. He, himself asked for the second technical foul from the referee. And he was ejected from the game. No R. Yap, now, no Topex. It was all Chico Lanete. And know what? Lanete was pushed by Wynne Arboleda, no foul. Making Arboleda shot a 3 point basket. Then showed his tongue. Grrrr..

But, I admired PF team. Despite unbelievable and almost one-sided calls, they managed to stay focused. It was 80 all with 4 minutes remaining in the Fourth Quarter. 89-86 in favor of Air21 with 1:38 minutes left. Still everybody's ballgame. I can't remember who made the basket, but it was 89-88 in favor of Air21 with 1:16 minutes left. The ball game was so exciting. It was 92-91 in favor of Air21 with only 40 seconds left. Kerby now has 32 big points. I almost gave up. It was 96-91 with only 23.5 seconds remaining. But Kerby never let me down. He just scored a 3 pointer to make it 96-94. Whew! In the last play before the end of the pay off period, it was 97-94 in favor of Air21. PF has no time out left. Kerby attempted another 3 point shot but failed to gain the basket. But J. Yap had the offensive rebound against Arwind Santos with about 3 seconds left. He had his turn around 3 point shot, and it was a tie ball game at the end of the 4th Quarter. This was the 3rd game where PF would be playing for an Over Time.

It was all because of Kerby and J. Yap. It's our night. Aaron Aban stand out as well for me, in defense particularly. It was 105-100 in favor of PF with 1:27 minutes remaining. 105-103 with 58.6 seconds remaining. 108-103 with 14.9 seconds remaining courtesy of the should be flagrant foul of Arboleda, but was called as a regular foul instead. 108-105 with 3.7 seconds remaining, PF's ball, and... we won!!!

And who could be the Best Player of the Game? None other than Kerby 'The Kid' Raymundo who scored almost 1/3 of the PF's score. Double-Double, 37 big points and 11 rebounds. Congrats Kerby!!! Congrats J. Yap!!! Congrats PF!!!
